Possibility of Dumaresq Dam Being Demolished

Armidale’s beautiful Dumaresq Dam may one day be no more, if crucial improvements aren’t made to its structure.

The Armidale Express reported that the dam is slated for demolition next year as there are major concerns over whether or not the dam would be able to handle severe weather conditions.

A lot of Armidale residents would be sad to see the dam go, but unfortunately costs to repair the dam could be between $1 million to $5 million, and even if the council did have the money for this they would most likely have to increase local rates to help cover the costs.

There is still a possibility that the Dumaresq Dam will stay, but funding will need to come from somewhere to make the needed improvements to the dam.

The Armidale community will have the opportunity to have their say on the matter before any final decision about the dam is made. The Council is currently investigating options and hopefully a practical option can be found that results in the Armidale community keeping the dam.

What do you think? Would you be devastated if the Dumaresq Dam was demolished?
